Kansas City is the headquarters of the privately-owned Hallmark Greeting Card Company that has also been involved in building retail and residential projects in the city. The Kansas City Board of Trade is also a trading center for the wheat used to make bread, hard red winter wheat. Kansas City is also the headquarters of one of the Federal Reserve Banks.

St. Louis, Missouri is the state’s largest metropolitan area, which includes portions of Illinois, for a total of 2.7 million people. St. Louis has been known as the Gateway to the West, and is on the Mississippi River. St. Louis is the headquarters of Anheuser Busch Breweries and also Monsanto, the maker of genetically modified crops.
